How it Works
Debt Management Plan (DMP). If it is determined that a member needs additional assistance to eliminate debt, a customized DMP is developed based on the member's situation and a Debt Management Agreement is sent to the member.
- The Debt Management Agreement authorizes MMI to pay creditors on the member's behalf.
- MMI works with creditors to stop collection, waive or reduce interest charges, eliminate finance charge or late fees, wherever possible. MMI can advice on mortgage debt, but does not negotiate directly with mortgage lenders.
- Member agrees to make a lump sum monthly deposit to MMI, based on the negotiated terms with creditors, as the member's trustee for creditor payments. Automatic deductions from the member's bank account are encouraged.
- Members receive intensified counseling for the initial 90 days of the plan's implementation. The member then receives ongoing support and service.
- There is a 33% discount on the set-up fee for a DMP. Regular DMP set-up fees vary by state but do not exceed $75. (For example, in states where there is a $75 fee, the union member cost is only $50.)
- The average monthly fee for a DMP is $19. Monthly fees vary by state but do not exceed $35. Monthly fees may be reduced or eliminated based on the member's Action Plan. In addition, a portion of the monthly fee ($5) is applied to the outstanding debt.
